The change process does not begin with a defined moment where you consciously recognize that change is occurring.

It frequently begins far before that, buried deep in our subconscious.

It seems that the ever so slight pin prick we feel in our soul, the fleeting thought of maybe things could or should be different, the millisecond of “what if” is where we begin.

It begins to slowly, methodically scrape away at our patterns. These small moments in time begin to challenge our foundations. They seem to evolve into some involuntary reactions that cause us to make small shifts in our behavior and our reactions.

As a therapist, I have people point out to me that they recognize their change once big moments happen, and I try to encourage them that they started doing the work way before they became fully conscious of it.

We are deep, complex human beings. It seems unfair or illogical to assign our defining moments as the ones where change has taken place. We have to recognize our ability to create micro-movements in our process of moving towards something different.
